Teeth Cleaning and Dental Check-up

Your first dental cleaning appointment at our office in Madison will take about an hour and a half. It will include oral cancer screening, digital x-rays, a comprehensive exam and thorough cleaning. Should we find any areas of concern that cannot be taken care of during a regular cleaning appointment, we will discuss what we have found, and make an appointment for further treatment.

We recommend teeth cleaning and dental checkups every six months. Subsequent dental checkups will consist of an oral cancer screening, a thorough cleaning and examination.

Oral Health Maintenance

Most children and adults should get a dental cleaning and checkup every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral diseases should have dental checkups more frequently than twice a year. Regular dental checkups help keep your gums and teeth healthy. They also allow us to detect any problems – such as gum disease, mouth/oral cancer and cavities – at an earlier and often more easily treatable stage.

It is recommended that children as young as one year old should have their teeth examined. The first dental cleaning is suggested around age two.

Regular dental checkups and cleanings, combined with proper, daily at-home oral hygiene are important in adequate oral health maintenance.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers are a breakthrough in cosmetic dentistry. These thin, durable “shells” of porcelain are bonded to the surface of the teeth, which enable patients to change the color, shape, and alignment of their teeth. Placing veneers is a more conservative procedure than placing crowns. Because they are made of porcelain, they are very strong and resist staining and chipping. Veneers are an ideal solution for patients with minor front-teeth imperfections such as uneven, jagged teeth, teeth with rough or striated surfaces, teeth that are chipped or teeth that are too stained for whitening.

Crowns

There are many ways the health of one’s teeth can become compromised: decay, trauma, chips. Regardless of how the tooth is injured, if left untreated, the tooth can become vulnerable to further decay. Crowns are a way to protect these compromised teeth from further damage. Crowns are hard, tooth-like coverings that are bonded over decayed or cracked teeth to protect them. Crowns also help cover and protect possible exposed dental nerves, resulting in less pain and discomfort. Porcelain (All-Ceramic) Crowns are state-of-the-art crowns result in natural-looking teeth. Since these crowns  don’t have a metal substructure, they don’t leave you with an embarrassing black shadow at the gum line. Ceramic Crowns are bonded to the tooth, which results in added strength and longevity.

Porcelain crowns yield a natural look with coverings that reflect and absorb light in a way that closely mimics that of natural teeth. Patients with porcelain crowns don’t have to worry about their teeth looking fake. Instead, they will have a beautiful, white smile they won’t be able to help but show off.

Same-Day Crowns

Crowns are the best way to treat a tooth that is too decayed for fillings, but isn’t compromised enough to be extracted. Modern porcelain crowns look and feel like natural teeth, better enhancing a patient’s smile. Traditional crowns, however, take a few weeks and multiple dental appointments to have them placed. This creates a great inconvenience to the patient and can expose the decayed tooth to further destruction and potentially subject the patient to painful tooth nerve exposure.

At Madison Smile Solutions, our patients don’t have to wait for their crowns. In fact they can have their crowns made and placed on the same day in our office; no additional office visits are required. We are one of a small fraction of dentists in Madison that offers PlanScan E4D Dentist™ same-day crown technology. We believe our patients deserve modern dentistry that fits their busy lifestyles, which is why we offer CAD/CAM technology, which delivers the same quality crown in just one day.  Usually you can get your crown completed in about 2.5 hours!

Teeth Whitening

You may be noticing that your teeth aren’t as white as they used to be. Over time, teeth commonly begin to turn a shade of yellow. This can be due to factors like smoking, diet, coffee, tea, sodas, wine, etc. Teeth also naturally discolor from age due to the natural wearing down and weakening of the tooth enamel.  Fortunately, there is an easy solution. At Madison Smiles Solution, we offer two types of whitening: custom whitening trays for home bleaching or fast in-office whitening.  Home bleaching is a great option for patients with minor surface teeth staining, who are able to wait longer to get beautifully white teeth. At-home cleaning is also popular amongst our patients who want to whiten their teeth in the privacy of their homes. Our professional, in-house teeth cleaning offer a quick, powerful clean and whitening that can tackle those stubborn, deeper stains.

If you hate using whitening trays or get sensitive when using whitening bleaching agents, then we’ll have the perfect solution for you.  Ask about our "Boost" that has left people leaving with whiter teeth with minimal sensitivity.

If you’re tired of hiding your smile because it’s not as bright and white as you think it should be, contact us at Madison Smile Solutions today and let us help you get that perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. It is also one of the preventable oral health problem. With gum disease, bacteria create toxins which inflame and irritate gum tissue and can cause systemic health problems. Over the years a progressive detachment occurs that also breaks down the supporting bone. If gum disease isn’t treated, teeth are no longer held in place and tooth loss can occur. Gum disease can be easily prevented and treated with early treatment. Gum disease comes in two stages: gingivitis and periodontal disease. Gingivitis is more common and affects many children and adult patients. This form of gum disease can be quickly treated and the damage can be reversed. If not treated, gingivitis can progress into the more serious periodontal disease. Patients who have this form of gum disease can’t get the damage reversed. If this gum disease isn’t treated, teeth can be lost and the stability and strength of the jawbone can get compromised.

Regular dental checkups and teeth cleaning can help prevent gum disease and allow our dentists to quickly catch and treat your gum disease to prevent it from escalating into potentially serious periodontal disease.

Invisible Braces

You may have been told that you’ll need braces to get that perfect, straight smile. The thought of wearing unsightly metal braces that also scratch up your mouth terrifies you. While traditional braces are still the best option for some patients, other patients can get their teeth aligned with Invisalign, a form of “invisible braces.” Invisalign treatment is customized orthodontics for your teeth that is made of clear, flexible plastic trays that are hard to see, hence, making it look like you’re not wearing any kind of braces.

We will take impressions of your teeth to create custom aligners specially designed for your teeth. You’ll wear these removable aligners constantly, day and night, except when you need to eat, drink, brush or floss. You’ll change to a new pair of trays every few weeks until your teeth are in correct alignment and placement. These clear aligners are comfortable, non-irritating to gums, and see-through so people won’t even know you’re wearing braces!  With Invisalign you can feel confident getting the smile you've always wanted.

Six Month Braces

At Madison Smile Solutions, we offer patients a six-month braces option as well as traditional braces. The Powerprox Six Month Braces® technique uses orthodontic brackets that are clear, tooth colored, metal, self-ligating, and lingual braces and special nickel titanium wires to move the teeth with low controlled force. In some cases, special elastics and springs are used to move teeth. The accelerated system moves teeth into proper positioning in significantly less time than with traditional braces. You will be amazed at how quickly your crooked smile starts to straighten out with Six Month Braces!

Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

Some patients have gum disease that can’t be treated with just a thorough cleaning. Non-surgical periodontal therapy, called root planing and scaling, removes plaque and calculus by controlling the growth of harmful bacteria and by treating conditions that encourage gum disease. This treatment will help to prevent further loss of bone and gum tissues and the supporting structures of your teeth. If periodontal disease is caught early, this type of treatment may be all that’s needed. Non-surgical periodontal therapy is recommended for patients who have a mile to moderate form of gum disease that may progress into periodontal disease, if not treated.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is a serious dental condition that is often fatal if not caught and treated early. When oral cancer is detected early patients have an 80 to 90% survival rate. Our hand-held light screenings are very fast and easy, and help us find oral cancer reliably. The technology uses a variety of wavelengths of light to identify abnormalities that may not be apparent to the naked eye. At Madison Smile Solutions, we’ll perform this oral cancer scan as a part of your six-month dental checkup and cleaning.

Root Canals

Root canals often get a bad rap, but they aren’t as bad as many think and they are an important treatment in preventing further, more serious oral health conditions and problems. A root canal treatment is a procedure done to save a tooth by removing damaged or dead pulp in the root canal of the tooth. This is accomplished by cleaning out the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal. The canal is filled with a rubberlike substance called gutta–percha or another material to prevent recontamination of the tooth. The tooth is then permanently sealed with a post and/or porcelain crown, which enables the patient to keep the original tooth. Most root canals can be done in one or two appointments and the recovery time is minimal, with possible mild pain a few days following the procedure.

Sedation Dentistry

The best dental appointment is the one you’ll never remember! About 30% of Americans have a fear of the dentist. But going to the dentist does not have to be painful or scary. Oral sedation dentistry — in which the patient takes a tiny pill one hour prior to a dentist visit — is a great way to experience dentistry free from any pain or anxiety. Patients receiving sedation for their dental appointment will need a companion to bring them to, and take them home from, their appointment.  Many of our dental patients take advantage of sedation dentistry because they can get more treatment done in fewer appointments - all the while feeling relaxed and comfortable.

Mouth Guards

Sports are a great way to establish teamwork and to get exercise. Participating in a sport, however, involves the risk of injury. High-contact sports such as hockey, football and rugby can especially pose a risk to trauma of the mouth. Depending on the age of the patient, a tooth knocked out from playing a sport may not be able to get replaced. Regardless of the age of the patient, a tooth can be saved if it is immediately treated by a dentist.

Mouth guards are great appliances to protect one’s teeth and keep teeth from getting knocked out. These flexible plastic  appliances also provide a degree of protection for the mouth’s soft tissues including lips, cheeks, gums and tongue. They also protect against concussions from blows to the head by cushioning the jaws upon impact.

At Madison Smiles Solutions we’ll fit you with a custom sports mouth guard so you can focus on playing your sport and not be bothered by an uncomfortable, ill-fitting mouth guard.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Fillings help protect teeth from getting further destroyed by surface cavities. Traditional fillings are made from amalgam, a metal alloy that contains traces of mercury. There have been health concerns over the mercury in these fillings. Traditional fillings also have an unattractive dark, metal look.

Now, there are tooth-colored fillings made of porcelain and ceramic materials that are stronger, fit more securely and have a translucent color that blends in with the rest of the tooth. Tooth-colored fillings can also be used for cosmetic dental treatments in changing the size, color and shape of teeth in a way that is subtle and natural-looking. In some cases, tooth-colored fillings can be used in closing gaps between teeth, repairing chipped teeth and making teeth appear to be straighter or even.

Senior Dentistry

It is important for seniors to know that it is never too late to preserve and protect teeth and gum health. Modern dentistry offers a variety of solutions that allow you to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile for life. Seniors have unique dental care needs that we at Madison Smiles Solutions can help treat. As one ages, the teeth and gums become more susceptible to decay and disease. Seniors also experience dry mouth from medications that can further jeopardize their oral health.

We offer treatment for senior-specific dental health problems including dry mouth, tooth wear and staining, recession and dental decay, taste loss (or alteration), gum disease and denture care.

Implants

Dental implants are a valuable and exciting treatment option for today’s dental patients who are missing one or more teeth. These small, titanium posts are inserted directly into the gums and the underlying jawbone. The titanium posts are topped with an abutment and a tooth-like ceramic crown. The titanium is readily absorbed by and incorporated into the body. Being inserted into the jaw makes implants a sturdy, permanent tooth loss treatment solution.

Implants offer patients a replacement for a missing tooth that looks and feels natural. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or can be used in conjunction with partial dentures or full dentures to increase retention.

Bridges

Bridges are a natural-looking replacement option for missing teeth. They are a series of attached ceramic crowns that fit over gaps left by lost teeth as well as surrounding teeth and/or implants.  Bridges can be supported by adjacent teeth, by implants, or by a combination of both. The benefits of bridges are that they can fill most gaps caused by missing teeth, they last a long time with proper care, and they look natural. There are four types of bridges available, including implant-supported dentures. Our dental specialists will work with you to determine which one is the best option for you.

Partial Dentures

Removable partial dentures provide a secure, natural-looking and comfortable prosthetic replacement of multiple missing teeth. These are great options for patients that still have quite a few remaining natural teeth and who want to replace teeth for functional or aesthetic reasons. Partial dentures are also a great option for patients who cannot have a bridge for any number of reasons (such as a lack of teeth to support bridge) and for patients who need more than dental implants.

Full Dentures

A full denture provides a prosthetic replacement for all of the missing teeth on either the upper or lower arch. Today’s dentures are vastly improved from your grandparents’ dentures. Denture technology has come a long way, making for more comfortably fitting, natural-looking dentures. Conventional dentures are removable, requiring them to be removed when eating and overnight to clean. There are dentures now that either clasp or are permanently affixed to dental implants. These full dentures fit more comfortably and securely, enabling the wearer to confidently eat with them in. Some modern dentures are permanent and don’t require being taken out.

Full dentures not only give patients a beautiful smile they can be proud to show off, but they also play a key role in the preservation of patients’ oral health by maintaining the structure and strength of the jawbone.
